It’s Coffee time bitches

So, originally I made this post several months ago as a way to stave off boredom and to actually get my ass out of the house. A few times a week I would head to a new coffee place and sample their best roasts creating a TikTok in the process. Sometimes the coffee was GOOD, sometimes mediocre, but most times it reminded me of the Before Times when going out for coffee was more of a chore, not a reward. MEH.

Red light action in the day: De Koffie Schenkerij

Firstly, it’s no where near as seedy as you think it’s going to be. Sure there are people who have clearly had too much fun, but there are also people just going about their day, living their best life. I went to De Koffie Schenkerij during the second lockdown as a way to escape the monotony of deciding which route I was going to walk for the up-teenth time.

De Koffie Schenkerij is located adjacent to the Oude Kerk. The cafe is small, but their selection is not. From memory, their pastries and breads are made fresh daily and are organic. Many are vegan/ veg friendly if that is your thing.

Their garden is the stuff of adorable, Instagramable legends, for which I can only recommend a 1000 times over. If you’re in the area and want sanctuary away from the cray, this is your spot.

Back to Black

I got this recommendation from TikTok. With the Rijks Museum once again open this is the place to go when you need that sweet, sweet caffeine hit. Back to Black is only a short 300 meter walk from the museum’s entrance so it’s easily manageable even for those who are less able-bodied.

There are three locations around Amsterdam, but since I rarely travel West I did the review on the one in the center. The cafe is located on the corner of a residential street, with cute outdoor seating. The interior is that sort of shabby, house plant vibe that you see a lot of coffee houses doing these days. But you aren’t here for décor tips, you’re here for coffee.

The day I visited I got an americano and a pain au chocolate. Now, the americano was so good! Like, I am still thinking about that coffee good. The pain au chocolate, well, that is a hard pass for me. It was a bit dry and it almost seemed like the chocolate was more of an after thought than the main reason one buys this lovely little pastry.

I 100% recommend this place and I thank the collective TikTok Gods for telling me about it.

De Bazel

Full disclosure. When I first saw De Bazel I always thought that it was de Brazil… I don’t know… sometimes I don’t read quite as carefully as I should.

Cool interior in an interesting space, but honestly, there are way nicer coffees to be had in this city. If you’re on a budget, need to escape the rain, or need a place with good people watching then I 100% understand why this might be your place.

Also, for those curious why, my video about coffee starts with a suit from Bloomberg … let me just tell you that he is the funniest fucking person I have ever read in finance and is worth the long read.

Now back to coffee. The place was a miss for me. I came home, finished my brew and then grabbed a cup of home brew.

saving the best for last: de Laatste Kruimel

This little gem is off a small alley way next to Rokin metro station. After walking by it, for over two years and never stopping, I made it a point to actually stand in line and go inside. * There is normally a line to get in, so please be patient. Also, don’t stand in the bike path while you’re waiting, that’s a solid way to get run over.*

The coffee is fabulous, the sort of pick-me-up you expect from a cafe that has pastries exploding out of their windows. There is apparently indoor seating, but I recommend taking your coffee to go and sitting around the corner on the edge of one of the canals. Oh and the big ass chocolate chip cookie that is bigger than your hand? Yeah! Get that, and thank me later.
